Playing Australian Rules Football on the Mornington Peninsula was first reported in the local newspapers in 1887 the same year that Frankston Football Club was formed. Frankston was the first Peninsula club to be formed but were quickly followed by Hastings and Mornington. Games were arranged between a core group of teams that played on a regular basis but many other games were played between junior teams, teams from schools and many social games were reported being played in the newspapers up to 1907.
During this time we saw the emergence of local teams representing Shoreham, Tyrone, Tuerong, Moondah and Rosebank, but these teams did not continue after 1907.
There were a number of attempts to form associations on the Peninsula between 1887 and 1907 but it wasn’t until 1908 when the Peninsula Football Association was formed which became the first genuine Association where football was administered professionally with clubs participating in a weekly fixture and playing finals for the premiership…
