The Mornington Peninsula Football League was formed on the 28th April 1934 with the amalgamation of the Peninsula Football Association and the  Peninsula District Football Association.

At the end of the 1983 season, promotion/relegation was introduced between the MPFL and the NFL, whilst both leagues retained their own administration.
At the end of the 1983 season the Pines FC was the first team to be promoted to the MPFL, while the Carrum FC were relegated to the NFL for season 1984.

The following year saw Bonbeach promoted to the MPFL and Sorrento relegated to the NFL and at the end of the 1985 season, Crib Point were promoted to the MPFL and Edithvale Aspendale relegated to the NFL.

Following a review into football on the Peninsula, on the 24th December 1986 the Mornington Peninsula Football League amalgamated with the Nepean Football League to form the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League..
